The Baker Pacific Group sought to revitalize and upgrade City Square Plaza to become a central gathering spot in Phoenix's Central Avenue business corridor. The Renovations, including a new event stage, new pavers, and new landscaping, are intended to connect the three surrounding office towers and offer a place for tenants and neighbors to connect, socialize during their lunch breaks, and host or attend events.
Gensler hired GuildWorks to design an iconic fabric structure. In close collaboration with the project team and the landscape designers, the courtyard was reimagined to be more comfortable for visitors by offering ample shaded seating opportunities, lowering the temperature, and preventing heat islands. The shade sails span over 7,000 sqft and reach heights of up to 60 feet.
By utilizing building anchors, the installation requires only a few central masts on the plaza, engineered to rest on the underground parking garage beams. The shade sails provide relief from the sun, and built-in LEDs illuminate the plaza at night. GuildWorks designed, engineered, manufactured, and installed the fabric structure in 2021.
