The Rady Shell, San Diego Symphony's breathtaking bayside venue is the first permanent year-round concert destination in the nation operated by the Symphony Orchestra. Designed for audiences of 3,500 to 8,000 per concert, and up to 10,000 for special events, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to the spectacular fusion of art and engineering.
The Rady Shell's creation faced the unprecedented challenges of the Covid Pandemic. Engaged in the technical design and fabrication, Fabritecture sought GuildWorks to orchestrate the construction and installation of all exterior and interior fabric elements. Collaborating closely, GuildWorks contributed to the design and specification of finishing components and the interior space, ensuring every detail reflected a symphony of perfection.
The Shell is built with rolled steel frame and exterior PTFE cladding, forming an awe-inspiring structure weighing approximately 236,000 lbs (107,000 kgs or 107 tonnes). With the stage accommodating up to 150 musicians and choir, extending over 100’ in width and 65’ in depth, the roof mesmerizes with a 49’ cantilever, capable of carrying a 50-ton payload.
As symphonies play and events unfold, the interior fabric turns into a captivating project-mapped surface, transforming every moment. The Rady Shell stands as a mesmerizing tribute to the art of orchestration and the pursuit of architectural excellence.
